FEATURED TIP: 3 TIPS FOR PREVENTING GAS
Topic: Pregnancy Symptoms

One of the early symptoms of pregnancy is an increase in gassiness, bloating, belching, and overall gastrointestinal discomfort. Gas is made primarily of odorless vapors such as carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and sometimes methane. The unpleasant odor of gas comes from bacteria in the large intestine that release small amounts of gases that contain sulfur.

Ok, ok  I admit the books on pregnancy did mention something about me gaining some type of weight of the period of nine months. I just didn’t take them seriously. I ‘vet seen pregnant women before I just thought there would be some way around the whole “get a belly” thing in my case. I have a friend who literally gained 13 pounds with her kids and she was fine. So I assumed I could be just like her. The only difference is that she works out like a mad woman and also has a starting weight of 95 pounds. No I’m not kidding.

Labor and Delivery
(Date: 2009-10-22 12:15:21)

With my twin girls (now three months old!) sleeping peacefully in their cribs, I prepared the bottles for daycare, and let my mind wander...

I thought back to when I first joined BabyFit, concened about staying fit and healthy during my first (and totally unplanned) pregnancy. As a 23-year-old single Marine stationed in Japan, I knew I would have to be strong, both physically and mentally. I didn't know what the father would do, I didn't know what to expect with twins, and I didn't have support from my family. I was totally alone and confused.

Childbirth ClassChoosing a childbirth class shouldn't be difficult, but there are many things to consider before taking a class. For starters, you should think about the teacher's experience, the number of couples in the class and insurance reimbursement.

Breast Cancer
(Date: 2009-10-01 14:20:27)

Your breasts undergo amazing changes when you become pregnant. As they develop milk ducts for breast feeding, they often double in size and become heavy with extra fluid. The breast tissue also feels more firm and "lumpy bumpy." These changes can make it difficult to diagnose breast cancer.

Pregnant women this week will offer up their arms for the start of the latest trial of a new swine flu vaccine, the government said Wednesday.
Pregnant women are priority candidates for vaccination because they accounted for 6% of deaths early in the epidemic, though they account for just 1% of the population, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. During the first month of the epidemic, they were also hospitalized at a rate that was roughly four times higher than for other groups, CDC says.

My son and his wife are expecting a baby boy in two weeks — the first grandchild on either side of the family. The couple lives with my daughter-in-law’s (controlling) mother and (passive) father, and I don't see a lot of them even though they're only three blocks away from me. My daughter-in-law is very opinionated — much like her mother. I really want to have a relationship with my grandson, but I am so afraid that under the circumstances, I will get [to spend] very little time with him. How do I handle this?

Biracial Baby
(Date: 2009-09-03 02:20:23)

Contrary to popular belief, my daughter does not have to "choose" her race. She is of two races, and can identify with both on whatever level she feels most comfortable. I feel it's my responsibility as the single mother of a biracial daughter to help her identify with both cultures wholeheartedly. I'm not raising her to believe that "white is right" or "black is beautiful".

So at #1 on the Top 5 things that I’m worried about as a soon-to-be mom is raising Betty to be a happy and well-adjusted bi-racial child. The only problem is that I have no idea how to do this. I read books to teach me how to do everything from writing to cooking — and yes, I even read Blogging for Dummies before starting Fierce and Nerdy. However, there are very few books on raising bi-racial children, and none that I can find with a publish date after 2005. Note: for this post only, when I say “bi-racial,” I mean half black and half white.

Daddie To Be
(Date: 2009-08-17 16:29:26)

Long gone are the days when a father paced back and forth in a smoky hospital waiting room while his wife gavebirth elsewhere, in a room full of strangers. This was the archetype during the mid-twentieth century. Fathers are now more in alliance with the creative process of pregnancy and birth, and therefore, mothers and babies. They have also taken up the mantle of being nurturers over the last several decades and have increased their participation in the family. This trend is producing astonishing results; ones which are also based in science.

Research suggests that children find unique acceptance in their relationships with grandparents, which benefits them emotionally and mentally. Grandparents can be a major support during family disruptions. Sometimes they're playmates for their grandchildren. They're very often role models and mentors for younger generations. They are also historians -- teaching values, instilling ethnic heritage, and passing on family traditions.
